NÃSCUTI A DOUA OARÃ Un copil cu autism poate avea sansa unei vieti normale dacã boala este diagnosticatã la timp, iar recuperarea se face cu ajutorul terapiei comportamentale ABA. Copiii cu autism sunt speciali, frumosi, unici, iar unii dintre ei pot avea abilitãti extraordinare si o inteligentã impresionantã. Cosmin si Bogdan sunt doi bãietei care urmeazã sã meargã la o scoalã normalã, doi copii care au sansa de a avea o viatã nouã.
În cotidianul nostru de ieri vã prezentam fundatia Cristi’s Outreach Program, singura din România care oferã, gratuit terapie ABA pentru copii bolnavi de autism. Din 2001, de când fundatia a fost înfiintatã si la Bârlad, nouã copii au fost recuperati complet, fiind astfel integrati în societate. Aici fiecare copil inclus în programul fundatiei are propriul dosar, fiind în permanentã analizat de terapeutii fundatiei. Pasii terapiei ABA, dar si activitãtile de grup desfãsurarte aici fac parte din programe stabilite de cãtre cei din America, tara în care se aflã sediul central al fundatiei Cristi’s Outreach Program. “Când copiii sunt înscrisi în progamul nostru, începem mai întâi cu dezvoltarea abilitãtilor de bazã, precum statul pe scaun, privitul, ascultatul. Nu se trece la urmãtorul pas, cum ar fi conversatia, cititul, etc., pânã când copilul reuseste sã facã singur toate aceste lucruri“, a declarat Nicoleta  Ababi Caravelea, directorul fundatiei din Bârlad.

POVESTI DE VIATÃ Sorin, Elvis, Mihaela, Mãlina, Gabriel, Andreea, Vali, Bogdan si Cosmin au învins autismul. Cosmin Ciornei, locuieste în Botosani si are acum sase ani. În iulie 2008, Cosmin a fost înscris în programul fundatiei Cristi’s Outreach Program, diagnosticat cu tulburare pervazivã de dezvoltare. În urma evaluãrii de început prezenta întârzieri severe în toate ariile de dezvoltare. Fiind din Botosani, Cosmin împreunã cu mama lui au stat în gazdã la Bârlad pentru a putea urma terapia ABA. Dupã multe luni de terapie si activitate de grup, bãietelul a înregistrat progrese majore, atât cognitive, social emotional, în dezvoltarea motorie, si în special în dezvoltarea limbajului. În martie 2009, Cosmin a fost scos din programul fundatiei, dar continuitatea existã, el fiind recuperat în urma terapiei ABA. Acum, bãietelul merge la o gradinitã normalã, unde este privit ca orice copil de vârsta lui. Bogdan Moruga din Bârlad este un alt caz reusit, el are sapte ani si de la toamnã va putea intra la o scoalã normalã. Din octombrie 2005 a început sã beneficieze de serviciile fundatiei, fiind diagnosticat cu elemente de autism si întârziere în limbaj. În 2006 a fost integrat într-o grãdinitã cu program normal, dezvoltarea limbajului luând amploare odatã cu sedintele de terapie. Acesti copii au arãtat cã se poate, au învins autismul si se pot bucura de copilãrie.

UNICAT La Bârlad existã o fundatie care vine în sprijinul copiilor autisti, fiind singura din România care oferã servicii gratuite de terapie ABA. Cristi’s Outreach Program este o fundatie americanã care a functionat la Bârlad mai întâi ca un program pilot, începând cu 2001. În 2004 fundatia a devenit de sine stãtãtoare, reusind astfel sã vinã în ajutorul copiilor autisti din întreaga tarã.

Autismul, o boalã din ce în ce mai frecventã, este o afectiune complexã care apare în primii ani din viatã. Astãzi, terapia ABA este recunoscutã pe plan mondial ca fiind un tratament sigur si eficient pentru autisti, contribuind la dezvoltarea abilitãtilor de bazã, precum privitul, ascultatul, cât si a abilitatilor complexe precum cititul, conversatia si întelegerea perspectivei altora. În prezent, la fundatia Cristi’s Outreach Program se aflã 26 de copii care beneficiazã de terapia ABA unu la unu, terapie ce este gratuitã, în conditiile în care, acest tratament poate ajunge între 1000-2000 euro pe lunã. La Bârlad se plãteste doar evaluarea copiilor, fãcutã de cãtre specialistii fundatiei, evaluare ce costã doar un million de lei. Acesta este motivul pentru care, fundatia adunã copii din diverse orase ale tãrii (Botosani, Bacãu, Brãila, Galati, etc.). Un lucru foare important este colaborarea strânsã cu „fundatia mamã“ din America, o datã la sase luni, terapeutii români primesc cursuri de instruire de la colegii americani. „Aici ne-am specializat, cu ajutorul celor din America, împreunã stabilim programele pentru copii, nu facem nimic fãrã sã ne consultãm cu ei. Terapia ABA este foarte eficientã, lucrând aici cu noi, dar si acasã cu pãrintii, multi copii pot fi recuperati si integrati în societate“, a declarat Nicoleta  Ababi Caravelea, directorul fundatiei din Bârlad.

Pe listele de asteptare din cauza lipsei spatiului
NEGLIJENTÃ Datoritã serviciilor gratuite, dar si a rezultatelor, fundatia Cristi’s Outreach Program are pe listele de asteptare un grup de 20 de copii autisti. Pentru acesti copii se pare cã lucrurile vor decurge mai greu, intrucât spatiul neincãpãtor al sediului fundatiei, nu permite desfãsurarea activitãtilor cu un numãr mai mare de copii. În prezent, sediul fundatiei se aflã în incinta clãdirii Directiei Generale de Asistentã Socialã si Protectia Copilului din Bârlad. „Îi multumim domnului Ionel Stefãnicã Armeanu pentru spatiul oferit, însã datoritã numãrului mare de pãrinti care ne implorã prin telefon sã încercãm sã le salvãm copiii, am avea nevoie de un spatiu mai mare. Nu ne plângem, suntem bucurosi cã reusim sã recuperãm acesti copii. Vom gãsi solutii pentru a ne mãri spatiul, ar fi si pãcat sã renuntãm dupã atâtia ani de muncã“, a mai declarat directorul fundatiei. În urma unei campanii desfasurate la nivel national de cãtre „Jurnalul National“, în urmã cu an, acestei fundatii i s-au promis multe, însã pânã acum nu s-a întâmplat nimic. La aceea vreme, autoritãtile locale promiteau un teren, plus utilitãtile necesare, cu conditia realizãrii unui proiect de cãtre membrii fundatiei. Singurul ajutor financiar vine din partea celor din America, dar nu este de ajuns pentru a solutiona aceastã problemã.

These children have shown that it can be done

BORN A SECOND TIME A child with autism has a chance for a normal life if the disorder is diagnosed early and treatment methods use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Children with autism aree special, beautiful, and unique and some of them can have extraordinary abilities and intelligence. Cosmin and Bogdon are two little boys who are going to attend a regular education program; they are two little boys who have a chance at a normal life. In our yesterday's issue we introduced you to Cristi's Outreach Foundation, the only program in Romania which provides ABA therapy for free. Since 200, when the foundation waas created in Barlad, nine children have been completely integrated into their communities. At Cristi's Outreach Foundation each attending child has their individualized behavior plan which is constantly reviewed by therapists. The teaching steps and the activities for group sessions are part of programs developed in the United States; that is where the main foundation is established. "When children are accepted into our program, we first teach them basic skills, such as sitting, attending, and establishing eye contact, and we do not work on more advanced skills, such as conversation or reading, until the child masters these basic skills" said Nicoleta Ababi-Caravelea, the foundation's director in Barlad.

LIFE STORIES Sorin, Elvis, Mihaela, Malina, Gabiel, Andreea, Vali, Bogdan and Cosmin have defeated autism. Cosmin Ciornei lives in Botosani and is now six years old. In July 2008, Cosmin was accepted into Cristi’s Outreach Foundation’s program, after he was diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder. Following his initial evaluation it was determined that he presented with severe delays in all areas of functioning. Because they lived in Botosani, Cosmin and his mother rented a place in Barlad so he could attend therapy. After many months of individual therapy and group activities the little boy showed significant progress in the cognitive, social-emotional, motor, and, most importantly, language areas. In March of 2009, Cosmin stopped attending the program, but there is continuity due to the amazing progress he has done through ABA therapy. Currently he attends a regular kindergarten program where he is indistinguishable from children his age. Bogdan Moruga, from Barlad, is another successful case. He is seven years old and is going to attend regular school in the fall. He attended the foundation’s program beginning with October of 2005; he was diagnosed with symptoms of autism and language delay. In 2006 he was integrated in a regular education kindergarten program, as his language developed quickly once he began therapy. These children have shown that it can be done: they defeated autism and can now enjoy their childhood.

ANOTHER CHANCE

UNIQUE A foundation in Barlad offers tremendous help to children with autism, as it is the only program in Romania that provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for free. Cristi’s Outreach Program is an American based foundation which has been functioning in Barlad, first as a pilot program, since 2001. In 2004 the program became a foundation in its own right, being therefore able to help children with autism from all over the country.

Autism, which has become more and more frequent, is a complex disorder apparent in the first years of life. Currently, Applied Behavior Analysis therapy is recognized worldwide as an efficient treatment for children with autism, supporting the development of basic skills, such as eye contact and listening, as well as more complex skills, such as reading, conversation, and perspective taking. Presently, Cristi’s Outreach Foundation serves 26 children who receive one-to-one ABA therapy for no cost, while this type of treatment can cost between 1000 and 2000 Euros per month. In Barlad payment is made only for the initial evaluation, which is done by the foundation’s specialists and only costs one million Lei’s. This is the reason for which the foundation gathers children from various Romanian cities (e.g. Botosani, Bacau, Braila, Galati etc.). Very important is the foundation’s collaboration with the “foundation mother” in the United States; once every six months, the Romanian therapists receive training from their American colleagues. “This is where we have received our training, with help from America; we make decisions about programming together, we do not do anything without first consulting with them”, said Nicoleta Ababi-Caravelea, the director for the foundation in Barlad.

On the waiting lists because of lack of space
NEGLIGENCE Because they are offering free services, as well as due to the results they have been obtaining, Cristi’s Outreach foundation has 20 children on the waiting list. It seems that for these children things will not go as smoothly, because the small space in which the foundation runs its services right now does not allow to admit any more children. Currently, the foundation runs in the Barlad Child Protective Services building. “We are thankful to Mr. Ionel Stefanica Armeanu for the space he has offered us; however, due to the large number of parents who are begging us to help their children, we need a larger space. We are not complaining, we are glad to be able to help these children. We will find a solution to this problem; it would be a pity to give up after all these years of hard work” said the foundation’s director. Following a national campaign ran last year by “Jurnalul National” the foundation was promised a great deal of support, but that support has not come yet. At that time the local authorities promised a space plus all the necessary utilities, if the foundation agreed to also work on a project. At this time the only support comes from the United States, but it is not enough to solve this problem.
