*Everyday Tip*
Remember that it’s not about knowing everything about Autism - it’s just about knowing your child.
You know and are always learning both what triggers your child’s disruptive behaviors and what brings about a positive response from your child. Learning the things and situations that affect your specific child helps to prevent situations that cause difficulties and helps you realize the specific targets you'd like to focus on to help your child be the most successful overall.
But it cannot stop at prevention! Practice is the answer to success in these areas - not avoidance. Practicing these targets in very small increments is what it takes - remembering not only to trigger the behavior but to then bring about the positive response as well. Then take the time to truly celebrate that small success with your child before moving on to the next small step.
