Parenting Tip
As a parent of a child with Autism, I have found it
very useful to constantly read up on new
developments (coming out practically every day!) in
the research of this disorder. I love to read books
written by adults who have grown up with
high-functioning Autism, and can now give us insight
to what they experience everyday, as well as what
they felt in the past but weren't able to share with
the rest of the world. I find that new doors of
understanding open every time I read one of these
books. A couple of my favorite books have been
Thinking in pictures by Temple Grandin (very
successful in the field of farm equipment) and
Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet (an Autistic
Savant). The insights I have gained from these
books has helped me to be more patient and
understanding of my child's needs. Another book I
recommend for anyone suffering because of an angry
or frustrated child (or any "typical" child even
;-)) is The Explosive Child by Ross W.
Greene, Ph.D. There is a world of resources out
there and it's just waiting for us to find it so we
can educate ourselves and others on this disorder
affecting so many families across the Globe. Happy
reading!!
