Social Group
This summer the Brent Woodall Foundation started a
social group for some of our local clients. Every
Wednesday for the past five weeks we have been
working with these children on their social
interaction and language skills. They are learning
to interact and hold conversations with not only the
Speech Pathologist, but also with each other. Each
group session starts with a greeting which involves
greeting your friends using appropriate language and
eye contact. Next, the children look at a calendar
and take turn answering questions about the day,
week, month, and year, as well as the season and the
weather for the day. Each week there is an activity
for the children to work on to help build their
language skills. Some of these activities include
telling stories, sharing information about your
family and friends, and asking for information from
others. Story time consists of the children sitting
around the Speech Pathologist as she reads a book.
Throughout the story, she will ask each of the
children a question about what was just read. The
children practice taking turns during game time. The
group is lead by Meredith Sorokwasz, a speech and
language pathologist who regularly consults for the
foundation. Members of the Brent Woodall Foundation
staff also assist in the group. This social group
was recently recognized in the
Coppell
