Speech & Language Tip
of the Month
Back to School
For
some children who have difficulty transitioning, the
first day of school can seem like a “disaster
waiting to happen”. Here are some helpful tips for
your child and you to make this transition easier:
-
Schedule a visit to your child’s school before
the first day to take a tour. Pay special
attention to the rooms your child will spend the
most time in. While you’re there take pictures
of the rooms and people your child will
encounter at school. Put these pictures in an
album or on a poster board to have a visual
while talking to your child about going back to
school. (Any kind of visuals make wonderful
supports!)
-
Meet with your child’s teacher before school
begins. Again, take pictures of the teacher(s)
to add to your album/board.
-
Meet with the children in your child’s class
before school begins. Schedule a play date so
the kids can get re-acquainted.
Use the “Buddy System”. If you know of a
responsible student in your child’s grade or older,
assign them as a “buddy” to your child. Arrange for
the buddy to be a helper to your child in the
cafeteria, gym, or at recess.
