INCLUSION
A data-based approach to including children with
autism in regular education classes.
Children with autism may learn prerequisite skills
to participate in regular education classrooms. The
success of these experiences, however, is often
dependent on the implementation of specific
behavioral teaching procedures and the skills of the
individual aide and classroom teacher. This
presentation will review specific strategies that
can be implemented within the classroom to promote
participation and successful learning of the child
with autism. Video taped examples will illustrate
prerequisite skills to target and various procedures
to implement within the classroom. Data measurement
procedures to document success will also be
reviewed.
I CAN DO IT MYSELF
Behavioral strategies to increase the independence
of children with autism.
With the advance of behaviorally-based programming,
children with autism can learn many skills never
thought possible. Children with autism can learn to
talk, play with toys, socialize with their peers and
become active functional participants in their
families and communities. The goal of any
intervention program, however, is to help
individuals with autism perform these responses
without supervision and direct prompts from adults.
This presentation will review specific skills that
enhance the independent functioning of individuals
with autism across a range of curriculum areas and
behaviorally-based teaching strategies to achieve
independence.
