Speech Tip of the Month

Explanations of commonly used terms in Speech-Language Pathology

  • Receptive Language – What the child understands

  • Expressive Language – How the child uses their language

  • Pragmatics – Social skills / integrative language skills

  • Semantics – Word meaning

  • Syntax – Sentence structure

  • Articulation Disorder – Speech-motor-control problem

  • Phonological Processing – patterns of errors

  • Oral Motor – exercises to help the lips, tongue and cheeks for
    feeding or articulation

  • MLU (Mean Length of Utterance) – An average of many words
    a child combines

  • Fluency – Deals with “stuttering” (fluent=no stuttering,
    dysfluent=stuttered speech)

  • Augmentative Communication – Communication through
    pictures or written words presented through a board, book or
    computerized device

  • Hypotonia – Low muscle tone

  • Apraxia of Speech - a difficulty coordinating the sequences of
    movements necessary for speech

  • Echolalia – nonfunctional repetition

  • Audiology – The study of hearing, disorders and management of
    those disorders
