Tips for Parents
by Becky Lowe

Since it is the first of the year and most of has tight budgets after the holidays, I thought I would share some of the ideas I have for bargains.

·          When looking for activities for our kids to do around the house, it can be challenging.  I have found that my daughter loves the computer and can surf the web like a pro!  We have found several sites that offer games and educational tools that are completely free to use:

-          www.nickjr.com – there is usually a game and/or an activity that relates to ever Nick Jr. show!  There are games for Blue’s Clues and Dora the Explorer.

-          www.playhousedisney.com – this site offers lots of games and activities that are fun for all ages.

-          www.pbskids.org – this site has many tools and games that   are educational!  There is a game in here that teaches how to dress appropriately for the weather and since our kids are mostly visual, this can be hugely beneficial when teaching a skill.

-          www.starfall.com – this site is for teaching reading and, of course, is geared towards the visual learner.  It has links for beginners to advanced readers.

·          We got to our local public library once a week and it is usually an award for completing a task.  Kate loves the library and since we have been going so long, she follows a routine and is very independent.  We started library rules from the very beginning and she is allowed to get 2 books and 3 movies each time we go.  This is one of her favorite things to do.

·          Kate is a Brownie Girl Scout and I am a troop leader.  We have found scouting to be a wonderful opportunity to work on social skills and teach other children about how everyone is different but we can all have fun together.  Kate has made friends through Girl Scouts and enjoys participating.

I hope this gives everyone some good ideas!  Feel free to share your own and we can add them to next month’s tips!
