Speech & Language Tip
of the Month
Lights, Camera, ACTION!
There are many
different ways to build a child’s vocabulary.
Some of the categories I’ve suggested in
previous speech tips were family members names
(December 2005), food, animals, clothing and
transportation (June 2007). Another route to
consider is teaching action words. These can be
really interactive and fun to learn. You can
“do” the actions to teach and reinforce the
vocabulary while playing together. You can also
target these words through picture cards, games,
TV programs, movies and books. Here is a
starter list of action words to target:
¨
Sit
¨
Stand
¨
Run
¨
Walk
¨
Kick
¨
Ride
¨
Drive
¨
Talk
¨
Cook
¨
Write
¨
Cry
¨
Crawl
¨
Drink
¨
Hug
¨
Read
¨
Dig
¨
Fly
¨
Sing
¨
Climb
¨
Eat
¨
Hop
¨
Swim
¨
Play
¨
Sleep
¨
Tickle
¨
Dance
¨
Wave
